It's a fair question, and it deserves an honest answer instead of a sales pitch. The truth is that repair is the right call more often than people assume — and replacement is the right call more often than people want to hear. The trick is knowing which situation you're actually in.
Start With What's Actually Failing
Siding damage falls into two very different categories, and they get treated very differently.
Isolated, mechanical damage
A cracked board from a wind-thrown branch, a dented panel from a ladder mishap, a section pulled loose in a windstorm off Lake Whatcom — this is damage to otherwise sound siding. If the rest of the wall is performing the way it should, there's usually no reason to replace anything beyond the damaged section.
Systemic failure
Cupping boards across an entire elevation, soft spots that show up in more than one spot, paint that won't hold no matter how many times it's redone, or moisture damage that keeps reappearing after repairs — that's not damage, that's the material or the installation telling you it's at the end of its service life. Patching one symptom while three more are developing behind it is money spent to buy a little time, not a solution.

Signs That Point to Repair
- Damage is confined to one or two boards or panels, not spread across a wall
- The siding is less than half-way through its expected lifespan
- The rest of the wall is flat, holding paint, and free of soft spots when pressed
- The cause was a one-time event (impact, storm, animal) rather than ongoing exposure
- Trim, flashing, and house wrap behind the damaged area are still intact
If that's your situation, a competent repair is the right, honest recommendation — not an upsell to a full tear-off.
Signs That Point to Replacement
The math changes once damage stops being a one-off and starts being a pattern. A few things we look for on an inspection:
- Repeat problems in the same area. If a section has been patched more than once, the underlying cause hasn't been solved — the repair is treating a symptom.
- Damage in multiple, unrelated locations. Siding failing on the north wall and the south wall at the same time usually points to the material or the original install, not bad luck.
- Soft, spongy, or delaminating boards. This almost always means moisture has gotten behind the siding, and by the time it's visible from outside, it's been happening for a while.
- Paint that won't hold past a couple of years. Constant repainting is often the siding telling you it can no longer take a finish, not a paint-quality problem.
- Visible moss or algae growth that keeps coming back on the siding itself (not just the roof or gutters), which points to a surface that's staying wet too long.
What Sudden Valley's Climate Does to Siding
This isn't a generic problem — where you live changes the calculus. Sudden Valley sits on Lake Whatcom, and homes here take a specific combination of punishment: salt-tinged air moving up from the Sound, long stretches of driving rain off the water, and a moss season that can run most of the year in the shaded, tree-covered lots common around the lake. Add Whatcom County's humidity and you get siding that rarely gets a real chance to fully dry out between weather events.
That matters for the repair-vs-replace decision because it shortens the runway. A material that might get twenty years of service in a dry inland climate can start showing systemic wear well before that here, especially on north- and west-facing walls that stay shaded and damp longest. When we see siding failing "early" relative to its rated lifespan, the driving rain and moss exposure specific to this area are usually part of the explanation, not a coincidence.
The Hidden Cost of Repeated Patching
Repair is usually cheaper than replacement in the short term — that's obvious. What's less obvious is how the math flips once you're patching the same wall every couple of years.

The column that trips people up is "matching existing material." If your siding is more than a few years old, the exact color and profile may already be discontinued. Repairs start to look patchy, which is its own kind of damage — to curb appeal and resale value.
Why the Original Material Changes the Answer
We're straightforward about this: what we recommend depends partly on what's already on the house.
Cedar
Cedar can be repaired for a long time if it's been maintained — sealed, repainted on schedule, checked for rot at the bottom courses. But once rot shows up in more than one spot, cedar's own moisture-absorbing nature usually means more is coming. In a wet, mossy climate like this one, we tend to see cedar reach that tipping point sooner than owners expect.
Vinyl
Vinyl damage (cracking, warping from heat, wind-lifted panels) is often repairable by swapping panels — if you can still find a matching color, since vinyl fades unevenly and older runs get discontinued. Vinyl doesn't rot, but it also doesn't stop moisture from reaching whatever is behind it, so a wall that looks fine from the street can still have problems underneath.
LP SmartSide and other engineered wood products
These are wood-based products with a resin/wax treatment, and their long-term performance depends heavily on caulking, flashing, and paint maintenance staying on schedule. Once moisture finds a way in at a cut edge or fastener, engineered wood siding can swell and deteriorate, and that damage tends to be more extensive than it looks from the outside.
Fiber cement
Fiber cement doesn't rot, doesn't absorb water the way wood does, and doesn't warp with heat the way vinyl can. That's precisely why we standardized on it — specifically James Hardie's engineered lines, which are formulated for exactly the wet, moss-prone Pacific Northwest exposure that Sudden Valley homes deal with. Repairs on Hardie siding are usually true one-off events (impact damage) rather than the first sign of a systemic problem.
A Practical Inspection Checklist
Before you call anyone, a five-minute walk around the house tells you a lot:
- Press on the siding in several spots, especially near the bottom courses and under windows — does it feel solid or spongy?
- Look at how many separate areas show damage — one spot, or several unrelated ones?
- Check whether paint or finish is holding evenly, or peeling/chalking in patches
- Look for moss or dark staining directly on the siding surface, not just the roofline
- Check corners, seams, and anywhere trim meets siding for gaps or soft wood
- Note whether any area has already been repaired once before
If you find damage in only one category and one location, repair is a reasonable starting point. If you're checking boxes across several of these, it's worth getting a full inspection before spending money on patchwork.
Getting a Straight Answer From a Contractor
This is one area where it pays to be a little skeptical of the first opinion you get, in both directions. A contractor who only repairs may patch a wall that's genuinely done, because that's the job they sell. A contractor who only replaces may push a full tear-off on siding that had another decade in it. What you want is someone willing to tell you when repair is enough.
A few questions worth asking any contractor before you commit either way:
- Are you recommending this because of what you found, or because it's the job you do?
- What specifically did you check to rule out hidden moisture damage?
- If we repair now, what's the realistic chance we're back here in two or three years?
- What warranty applies to a repair versus a full replacement?
