If your priority is the lowest possible sticker price and you're planning to sell or move within a decade, vinyl isn't an irrational choice for a lot of homes. We just don't think it's the right long-term choice for the homes we build for here.

Where Vinyl Struggles in This Specific Climate

Sudden Valley sits on Lake Whatcom, close enough to the Puget Sound weather patterns to get driving, wind-blown rain off and on most of the year, plus a long moss and mildew season that runs from fall through spring. Add the salt-tinged marine air that moves inland from Bellingham Bay and the Strait of Georgia, and you've got a climate that's harder on exterior materials than the sunbelt conditions a lot of vinyl products are engineered and tested in.

Thermal Movement

Vinyl is a plastic (PVC) product, and plastic expands and contracts with temperature swings far more than fiber cement or wood. Panels are hung with slotted nail holes specifically so they can move. When a wall gets full sun exposure and then a fast temperature drop — which happens here — that expansion and contraction cycle repeats thousands of times over the life of the siding. Over years, that movement is what causes the ripples, buckling, and gaps you see on older vinyl jobs.

Vinyl siding is not a water barrier by itself — it's designed as the outer layer over a house wrap or building paper that's supposed to do the actual water management. None of this means every vinyl-sided house is at meaningful fire risk in normal use. It means that when we're deciding what to put our name behind, non-combustible, impact-resistant material is the safer default for the lakeside, tree-adjacent lots common around Sudden Valley.

The Real Cost Math Over Time

Vinyl wins on day-one price, almost every time. But the honest comparison isn't installed cost — it's cost per year of service, factoring in what typically happens over a 20 to 30 year window:

  • Vinyl often needs replacement panels or a full re-side sooner if UV fading, cracking, or moisture damage behind the wall shows up.
  • Vinyl warranties are frequently prorated, meaning the payout shrinks every year — read the fine print before assuming "lifetime" means what it sounds like.
  • Fiber cement carries a materially higher install cost but a longer realistic service life and a warranty structure that isn't prorated down to nothing by year 15.
  • Resale and appraisal data in most markets consistently favor fiber cement and other durable claddings over vinyl, which can offset some of the up-front cost gap.

Why We Install Only James Hardie Instead

We standardized on James Hardie fiber cement because it addresses the specific weaknesses above without introducing new ones we're not comfortable with.
